Song for DD launched
A charity single has been released, recorded by serving UK prisoners, who were touched by the story of 16 year-old David “DD” Langton-Gilks, who battled a brain tumour for five years. ‘Song for DD’ is a moving tribute to the brave teenager.

Support and help
The prisoners wrote and performed the song for their teacher, DD’s father, Toby Langton-Gilks, when they heard DD was dying of a brain tumour. They wanted to offer their support and help, as a mark of respect for all Toby had done for them through his Urban Beat Shop music production course. Proceeds of the song will be split between The Brain Tumour Charity’s HeadSmart campaign and CLIC Sargent, who provided DD and the family with financial, practical and emotional support from the point of diagnosis onwards. DD designed the cover of the single.
An inspirational campaigner
DD died last August after suffering five gruelling years of cancer treatment and further brain procedures. After being told by doctors that he had very little time left, he bravely gave media interviews in a bid to promote the HeadSmart campaign. HeadSmart seeks to reduce the length of time it takes to diagnose brain tumours in children and young people, thus reducing long term disabilities and, ultimately, saving lives. 500 children are diagnosed with a brain tumour every year and they are the biggest cancer killer of children and young people, killing more children than either leukaemia or meningitis. DD’s mum, Sacha, is one of our HeadSmart Community Champions and continues to work tirelessly to promote the campaign in a bid to save other families the pain they she and her family went through.
CLIC Sargent provided DD’s family with a place to stay during treatment, CLIC Haven in Southampton, which was essential for the whole family during times of gruelling treatment.
Sacha and Toby Langton-Gilks
Toby has high hopes for the single. “It’s a great song and I’m so moved the guys have done this. It’s more than just a song: when people download it, they’ll become aware that diagnosing paediatric brain tumours early is absolutely vital to saving children’s lives, and they’ll also know more about the financial and other difficulties families go through when children undergo cancer treatment. I really hope everybody will go to iTunes, Amazon and Spotify and download the song. It would be such an amazing tribute to DD.”
