Cancer Moonshot 2020 launches brain tumour genome project

The Paediatric Brain Tumor Atlas Project has been launched by Cancer MoonShot 2020.

This American project aims to analyse the genomes of over 1,600 children with brain tumours, bringing together the Childhood Brain Tumor Tissue Consortium (CBTCC), Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the Hyundai Cancer Genomic Program in the USA.

The project is expected to take just six months to complete and this large library of information will be made publicly available to all researchers, nationally and internationally, so they can benefit from this invaluable data.

We are grateful that Dr. Soon-Shiong has made this $20 million award to bring together these important visions. I believe this is a perfect synergy of efforts to lead to discovery,” said Adam Resnick, Director of The Childhood Brain Tumor Tissue Consortium (CBTTC) in Neurosurgery at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

This is a really exciting project to help discover insights that lead to earlier diagnosis, improved treatments and ultimately improved quality of life for paediatric brain tumour patients.

Genomics England are carrying out a similar analysis to collect data on cancer patients.

The 100,000 Genomes Project is an ambitious three-year programme to sequence 100,000 whole genomes from NHS patients, including brain tumour patients, across England by 2017.
