Why it’s good to talk

When you or a loved one is diagnosed with a brain tumour, it can take time to absorb the news. In addition, everyone copes with a brain tumour diagnosis differently. Some people would rather not talk about it at all, while others find solace in hearing about or reading about others’ experiences and sharing their own.

Whatever your decision, opening up to just one or two people and talking things through can help if you feel you are bottling up your emotions. Experts suggest that talking about a diagnosis can have positive effects on your wellbeing. Find out more by reading our Q&A with psychologist Katherine Carpenter.

Your brain tumour – your story

There may come a time when you’d like others to understand what you’ve been through in case they find themselves in similar circumstances. It can also help to share your story if you are involved in fundraising or awareness raising activities. If you decide to do this, if and when the time is right for you, we are hugely grateful. We also aim for you to have as much control over this process as possible. Our Stories team can phone you, or arrange a video call, but if you’d prefer to record a video or voice note, or write things down in your own words, let us know on the form below.

The people featured on this page have chosen to share their stories through us. Below, they discuss their experiences, explain why they were motivated to speak out and the effect that a diagnosis had had on them, their families and the wider community.
