Blog: Keeping cool in the heat

Wednesday 22 August 2018

Whether enjoying a picnic with friends, or a day at the beach, many of us enjoy being able to get out and about. But if a heatwave leaves you wishing you could switch your beach umbrella for your rain brolly, you're not alone. So, we've put together our seven top tips to keep cool in the heat.

  • Make your own air-con. If you're struggling to sleep during the warmer nights – even with a fan on – then we might have the perfect cost-effective solution. Simply freeze a bottle of water or two, and place them in front of your fan to make your very own homemade air-con. The more and larger the bottles, the greater the cooling effect!
  • Turn your yoghurt pot into a palette pleaser! You don't have to have ice lolly moulds to make a refreshing summer snack. Instead, simply add some berries, fruit juice, yoghurt or cordial with some water into a yoghurt pot and freeze to make a delicious homemade ice lolly.
  • Splash cold water on your wrists. If you're looking to cool down quickly, run your wrists under the cold tap or place an ice cube on the side of your neck. Our blood vessels are close to the surface of our skin at our pulse points, so cooling these small areas, will cool your whole body too.
  • Lose the latte. Although an iced coffee might look refreshing, you're better off avoiding caffeinated drinks which can cause you to lose fluids. Instead, try to drink eight glasses of water a day to keep cool and hydrated.
  • Have a hot (decaf) tea. When you're feeling hot, it can be tempting to want something cold. But research suggests that drinking hot drinks can actually be a better way to cool down. Hot drinks raise our body's core temperature. This leads to us sweating more, and making the body cool as sweat evaporates off the skin.
  • Soothe your skin. For an extra cold kick when you wake up, place your moisturiser or sunscreen in the fridge. That way you can lower your temperature before you've even stepped outside.
  • Have n'ice' dreams! If you're someone who hates the warm side of a pillow, then we've got a cool solution for you. Shortly before you go to bed, pop your pillowcase into a plastic bag and place it in the freezer. When you take it out, the cold material will help cool you down ready for a good night's sleep.
