Brain tumour dad’s 300-mile cycling team raises nearly £138,000

Cheshire husband, dad of five and brain tumour survivor, Rob Ward’s 31-strong team, took on the 300-mile London to Paris cycle challenge in September.

Rob was joined on the 300-mile by his wife Aisling, brother and two brother-in-laws. To date the team have raised an incredible £138,000.

Rob’s own fundraising efforts have now reached £16,122, smashing through his initial £10,000 target. Several of his colleagues have also passed their initial pledge including Bod Buckby, who has raised an astounding £26,000, far surpassing his initial target of £5,000. Bod had three surgeries last year on a brain tumour.

Rob said: I have personally been affected by brain tumours. Back in January of 2014, I received the devastating diagnosis of a brain tumour. Successful surgery followed but the impact is far reaching for me and my family as it is for countless others.

“I now want to raise awareness of a disease that is desperately underfunded and as a result, early diagnosis is very poor. Brain tumours are a life limiting condition and there is so little known about the causes and treatments of them.

“The cycle challenge was a unique event that united so many people personally affected by this terrible disease and giving a huge awareness boost to the sterling work The Brain Tumour Charity are doing towards finding a cure.

“Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40 and also reduce life expectancy by an average of 20 years, the highest of any cancer.”

Geraldine Pipping, the charity’s Director of Fundraising said, “We receive no government funding and rely 100% on voluntary donations and gifts in Wills. It is only through the incredible efforts of people like Rob and this London to Paris team, that we can change this shocking situation in the future and bring hope to the thousands of people who are diagnosed with a brain tumour each year.”
