Victory as team Ocean Valour reach the UK

Having left New York on 3 May 2015, Tom and Lawrence arrived in Salcombe Harbour at 16:53 today, becoming the youngest duo to row the Atlantic unaided.

Tom and Lawrence arrived back in the UK after becoming the youngest duo to row the Atlantic unaided.

In 2012, just before Christmas, Tom lost his father, Luke Rainey, to a brain tumour. As a passionate sailor Luke taught Tom a great deal about the ocean. His death rocked Tom and his family to the core, but through The Brain Tumour Charity they were provided with the help and advice which Tom described as “an invaluable port in an otherwise unweatherable storm”.

In tribute to his dad Tom founded team Ocean Valour to raise money for The Brain Tumour Charity by rowing across the Atlantic with team mate Tom. Their boat was built and named Yves after Tom’s father’s own boat.

Tom’s dad loved sailing and Tom wanted to challenge himself in his memory – it’s his way of grieving. I’m so hugely proud of him and know his dad was with him and is guiding him home safely.” Anne Rainey, Tom’s mum

Today, after spending 93 days at sea and having set a new world record for nautical miles rowed in 24 hours, the pair celebrate arriving back in the UK and returning to solid ground.

As a parent, you never know what your child is capable of and I am awestruck at what Lawrence has achieved. Visualising them coming over the horizon is what has kept me going.” Vanessa Helps, Lawrence’s mum

The pair have raised over £56,000 to date. You can donate by visiting the team’s Just Giving page.
