Culture and values

With us, you can be you – the real you!

While we face tough challenges along the way, we nurture an inspiring, fun and positive team environment where you feel valued for being you – the real you, and where you can use your unique talents and skillset most effectively to make a productive and successful difference.

A ‘we can’ culture

We create an environment where you feel valued for being you – because if you can use your unique talents and skillset, then together we can. Though the challenges we face can be tough, we take pride in nurturing an inspiring and positive environment. Whether that means joining our book club, taking lunch at our puzzle table or celebrating Pride with a Bake Off, there’s plenty to get involved in!

“Having worked at toxic workplaces before, I feel so lucky to be a part of The Brain Tumour Charity’s team where everyone is valued. Whether working from home or in the office, you’re in an environment where there is inclusion, respect, and a whole lot of fun – the constant stream of cake really helps too!”

Our values

Our values: community-first, collaborative, bold and innovative, underpin our culture, the way we do things and what we believe in.

Community First

We put the community’s needs first, ensuring our work is informed by those with lived experience and that they are the driving force behind our decisions. We include everyone, amplifying their voices and uniting in our shared purpose to create change.

Collaborative

We know that we’re stronger together, so we choose to lean on each other, share openly and utilise expertise and knowledge wherever it exists. We seek out and support diverse perspectives, operate without ego and are part of a connected eco-system that everyone can join.

Bold

We are unapologetically ambitious and true to ourselves. We’ll be brave and think bigger – as there’s just no time to waste. We’ll be confident and relentless in challenging the status quo, even when that means making difficult decisions. We’re determined, focused and unstoppable.

Innovative

We’re creative and adopt a growth mindset, always using our experience and imaginations to find smarter and more effective ways to propel progress. We’re not afraid to think differently, find new ways to solve problems and be agile in ‘testing and learning’, so we can move at pace in pursuit of our vision.

Championing change

We are passionate about moving further, faster in making a real change and we want to empower our team to champion what’s important to them. We’ve formed four team-led champion groups that ensure we keep Equity, Diversity & Inclusion, Sustainability, Culture and wellbeing at their core.

Learning and Development

With us, you can grow and develop.

A cure can’t wait! That’s why we will always support your learning, growth and development to help you go further, faster. Because we know that if you can, we can too.

We’re committed to enabling our team to be the best they can be. That’s why we give everyone time to plan their development and growth with their line manager via regular one-to-ones and quarterly reviews, supporting this process with a strong learning and development offer.

As soon as you join the team, you’ll start working through The Charity Foundation Programme – a detailed personalised on-boarding programme that covers your first 100 days at The Charity. You’ll also have access to The Charity Academy, which includes a range of self-managed learning resources from Brilliant Basics to Leadership and beyond.

We’ve adopted a blended approach when it comes to learning and development, which means that as well as attending internal and external face-to-face training, we also encourage attendance to free conferences and seminars, and champion self-directed learning, on-the-job learning and involvement in exciting and stretching projects. With an exceptionally talented team, we maximise our opportunity to learn from each other through learning lunches, mentoring schemes and action learning sets.

We know that every single member of our team can make a life-changing difference and play a vital role in our vision – a world where brain tumours are defeated. And the more knowledge, experience and skills we can all gain, the quicker we can get there.

“I’ve worked at The Brain Tumour Charity for 7.5 years and life has changed a lot for me in this time! I’ve had two amazing little girls and therefore the role I started in and loved as a Community Fundraiser wasn’t the best fit anymore.

I feel incredibly fortunate The Charity have enabled me to remain employed at a charity I feel so passionate about, moving to part-time and into other departments that better suited my lifestyle. These shifts enabled me to bring my skills and expertise into other teams but also upskill and develop in areas I wouldn’t have otherwise known about.

The learning opportunities at The Charity are endless! It has taken a little while to find my true passion and where I feel I can truly shine at The Charity since having a family. However I’ve continued to work hard and found my way into the Involvement and Impact team, supporting those in the community having their voices heard and am very happy. I’m very grateful for the patience of The Charity and supporting my growth.“
