General Election 2017 result: No overall majority as Labour make unexpected gains

After seven weeks of relentless political campaigning across the UK, voters finally had their say at polling booths on Thursday, as a shock ‘hung parliament’ result emerged

Despite every indication that an increased Conservative majority was looming, the Labour Party made significant gains across the UK to force a hung parliament – a situation where no political party occupies an overall majority of seats in the House of Commons.

Contrary to many expectations, the Conservatives are set to finish narrowly short of an overall majority on 319 seats. Meanwhile, Labour are expected to increase their seats by 29 to secure 261 seats in total. The full result can be viewed at the bottom of this article.

Even with losses in parliamentary seats, Theresa May’s Conservatives are nonetheless in a strong position to form a government with support from the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). We will update you on these developments when more news emerges.

Despite the unexpected outcome, the result doesn’t change things for brain tumour patients and their families. The issues that matter to our community remain vitally important and we will continue to engage with elected representatives and other key decisions makers to drive change where it is needed, because a cure can’t wait.

Thank you!

The announcement of a snap General Election caught many people by surprise, including ourselves. However, we know that a cure can’t wait so we didn’t either. A week after the announcement, we launched our #YourVoiceMatters campaign, to promote four key policy asks.

We have been overwhelmed by the level of support that we’ve received from our community during the campaign. Nearly 700 of you have taken action, whether you signed the bereavement benefit petition, wrote to your local candidates or promoted our election asks on social media– thank you for your inspiring efforts. Your support is invaluable and we can’t achieve our ambitious goals without your help.

Our work continues

We at The Brain Tumour Charity urge you to join us in our work, in whatever way you can, because by working together we can deliver meaningful change. With the election campaign having reached a conclusion, our work continues. Your Voice Matters, so let’s work together to ensure that politics works for us.
